Women account for only 13% of board positions in Irish plcs and 27% of positions on commercial state boards (2016). Yet, there is extensive research which shows that companies with diverse boards outperform their competitors.
The Board Diversity Initiative was set up by Vivienne Jupp and Anne-Marie Taylor in 2010 with the aim of increasing the representation of women on boards in Ireland, and encouraging chairs of boards to consider the total talent pool when appointing new non-executive directors.
There is no shortage of talented women candidates for non-executive director positions. Through this initiative we aim to raise their profiles. The primary activity is the production of a directory of women who are qualified and willing to serve on boards. The 4th edition of the directory was published in January 2017 and includes 109 women. Since the first directory was published, 82 board appointments have been made from the women listed, of which 14 were to plc boards.
This is an independent voluntary initiative with no funding, just fuelled by the passion of two people who believe that women can and should contribute more to Irish boardrooms.
PwC have generously sponsored a number of events and the development of the website. Accenture have kindly sponsored the printing and distribution of the directory.
Please note that membership of the Board Diversity Initiative is by invitation only. If you would like to find out more about the Board Diversity Initiative, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org providing your name and organisation.
